Job-seeking Europeans benefit Aussie farmers
The financial crisis in Europe is having a positive side effect for Australian farmers, according to a rural company who specialises in finding farm work for backpackers.
Peter Angel, from Harvest Trail, says that in the past most young European travellers would holiday in Australia before seeking employment in rural areas.
However, he says, their priorities have changed, and that has benefits for farmers looking for casual labourers.
“At the moment it’s interesting, because a lot of Europe has got very high unemployment, particularly in amongst the youth, and a lot of them are coming here to get a job, not just to do a working holiday, but just to get a job because they can’t get one at home at the moment,” he told ABC News.
“Some of them are coming, or a lot of them are coming, wanting work immediately because they’re really not that cashed up.”
