Skilled worker shortage a big concern for tourism

After the high Aussie dollar, finding skilled workers is the biggest concern for tourism operators in Australia.

The SA Tourism Industry Council told ABC News skilled labour is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain, particularly in regional areas.

The council’s Ward Tilbrook raises a number of concerns about the state of South Australia’s workforce.

“It’s what we can do to enhance our recruitment,” he said.

“What are our employment hot spots? Where do we need the labour? What are our education and training gaps?

“There’s issues around workforce mobility. How do we marry up our differing seasons and peak periods within the state and within the country that we can facilitate the mobility of our workforce in tourism?”

According to a national survey by the Tourism and Transport Forum, the shortage of skilled labour is the second highest concern for operators, behind the strong Australian dollar

  2. To fill in the gaps perhaps it’s time to recognise the value of baby boomers who have experience, passion and flexible time – and strong work ethic! Dont write us off for a while – there’s life in the boomers yet! We invented partying hard…
